幽默"是由英文Hum—our一詞音譯而來(lái)的.而英文中的這個(gè)詞,則來(lái)源于拉丁文的humorr,本義是"體液".古希臘有一位名叫希波克拉底的醫(yī)生認(rèn)為,人的體液有血液,粘液,黃膽汁,黑膽汁等等,其組成的比例不同, 便會(huì)形成人們的不同氣質(zhì)和脾性.而幽默一詞的廣泛運(yùn)用,則要?dú)w功于英國(guó)人文主義戲劇家瓊生了.他創(chuàng)作的《個(gè)性互異》和《人各有癖》兩部作品,均以幽默見稱.他的諷刺喜劇代表作《伏爾蓬涅》里,其人物性格便是按照"氣質(zhì)"劃定的,有"狐貍","蒼蠅","兀鷹","烏鴉"之類的命名. 大概由于文藝的社會(huì)功能所致,瓊生的幽默理論也不脛而走.而最初將此詞移入中國(guó)來(lái)的,則要推林語(yǔ)堂了.這是一個(gè)音,意兩譯的詞,其表述方式自然是恰到好處了.
