為什么歐美很多城市的名字中帶有堡？
堡，通常指軍事上防守用的建筑物，大多是高地、城堡的意思。古代打仗，君主把城墻修筑在居高臨下的高地，有利于增強(qiáng)武器的殺傷威力，具有易守難攻的軍事價(jià)值，因此這類城市的名字中都帶有堡。
常見含堡的城市就是美國(guó)的匹茲堡(Pittsburg)、英國(guó)的愛丁堡(Edinburgh) 、德國(guó)的漢堡(Hamburg)、荷蘭的中堡(Middleburg) 、俄羅斯的圣彼得堡（St.Petersburg）、奧地利的薩爾茲堡(Salzburg)、土耳其的君士坦丁堡（Constantinople，即伊斯坦布爾）等等。
可以注意到，這些城市的英文名中，后綴大多是burg和burgh，意思就是有圍墻（或城堡）的城，也就是我們所說(shuō)的“堡”。另外還有bourg、burh、burch、berg、borg等等都是各日耳曼方言里的轉(zhuǎn)寫。中西交流之初把 burg 翻譯成堡，這類轉(zhuǎn)寫自然也都翻譯成堡。
英國(guó)愛丁堡（Edinburgh ）中的“堡”（burh）為占領(lǐng)此地王國(guó)的古英語(yǔ)，意思是山坡上的城堡。愛丁堡的城市名字就起源于著名地標(biāo)愛丁堡城堡，當(dāng)時(shí)是愛丁堡市用來(lái)防御的重要要塞。
美國(guó)的匹茲堡(Pittsburgh)，后半截burgh是來(lái)自蘇格蘭語(yǔ)，原本寫作bourgh，后來(lái)學(xué)習(xí)愛丁堡(Edinburgh)的寫法改為burgh。1891年美國(guó)為了規(guī)范地名，一度把匹茲堡最后的h去掉，但最終在1911年，匹茲堡決定把h加回來(lái)了。
總而言之就是，古代歐美這些地區(qū)為抵御其他外族人的入侵而修建了城堡，城堡很好的控制了周圍的土地，形成了一個(gè)個(gè)城鎮(zhèn)，這些城鎮(zhèn)延續(xù)了其城堡名，所以帶“堡”的城市就比較多。
